In the summer of 1927, H.R. Dobson, a football coach from Spartanburg, South Carolina, brought a group of boys to the mountains of North Carolina to train for the coming football season. They camped out on the shores of Wolfe Lake in canvas tents, spending their days exercising, playing games, hiking, and swimming. The following year, H.R. Dobson returned and established Camp Pinnacle for Boys. The first cabins, dining hall, and other buildings were built in time to open for the summer of 1928. In 1929, Van Kussrow purchased the camp property while H.R. Dobson continued as the director of Camp Pinnacle. More cabins were built as the camp grew and in 1931 Camp Pinnacle for Girls was established with Mrs. Dobson as the director. The girls’ camp met in June while the boys’ sessions were held in July and August. The boys’ and girls’ camps still follow the same calendar. You will find that although there are lots of new opportunities for the campers these days, the traditions set forth in our early years and the values of friendship, responsibility and personal growth are the same as they were. The Dobsons shaped Camp Pinnacle for three decades until H.R.’s death in 1959. H.R. Dobson is fondly remembered each summer when we present the Dobson Camper Award to those campers showing excellent character, expert skills, and outstanding achievements.
In the summer of 1960, Van Kussrow and his family assumed the leadership of the camp. |
